Dos & Don'ts Post Cataract Surgery

When your eye lens becomes cloudy and affects your eyesight, it is called a cataract, and your eye specialist will recommend undergoing cataract surgery in Dubai. It replaces your lens with an artificial one that will help restore your vision. Therefore, you will be able to enjoy a better quality of life, be safe and protect your eye health. While the surgical procedure is not complex, you will have to abide by specific rules afterward to ensure a smooth recovery. We will explore what they are in this article.

Do’s

Take the medication you are prescribed on time. After the surgery, your eye specialist will prescribe medicines that you need to take. While in the hospitals, our nurses would ensure you have them on time. Once you reach home, it is your duty, and you should make sure you have them as prescribed without any delay or alteration. Failing to take the medication could result in inflammation or irritation.

Do wear UV-protection sunglasses when going outside. After cataract surgery, your eyes are more sensitive than they used to be. Therefore, they could become vulnerable to UV exposure. To ensure they stay healthy, you need to wear sunglasses with a UV-protective coating when you go outside. The artificial lens does have a layer of the protective film; however, relying solely on that to keep your eyes safe could be unwise and risky. Typically, our doctor would recommend wearing the special sunglasses for at least a year to preserve your eye health.

Don’ts

Don’t rub your eye

After the procedure, your eyes will feel dry and itchy. Therefore, you may be tempted to scratch it. However, do not do so. If you rub your eye, you could move the new lens and displace it, causing blurry vision and problems with focus. If the lens moves to the vitreous cavity, it could result in vitreous hemorrhage or a retinal detachment. Repositioning a dislocated lens requires a more complex surgery with increased inflammation afterward. Therefore, always refrain from itching your eyes. If the discomfort is unbearable, speak to your doctor for new medication.

Do not wear eye makeup or any products that may contact your eye.

To properly heal after cataract surgery, even the best eye specialist will recommend avoiding wearing makeup after the procedure for at least one to two weeks. The reason we tell you this is to ensure you do not develop an infection. The eye makeup and products you use can harbor bacteria that could get into the eye and cause an infection. If the latter occurs, you may suffer from severe symptoms and could require urgent medical care. Your recovery period may also be affected significantly.

While cataract treatment can help restore your vision, failure to abide by the above rules could result in easily avoidable complications and expensive complex procedures. Therefore, speak to our eye specialist and discuss everything you should do and not do after the surgery. Afterward, make sure to abide by them for the best post-surgical recovery.
