ACL repair surgery uses a graft to replace the ligament of the knees, which is often prone to tear, damage and fractures during strenuous exercise or sports. Generally, most ACL tears cannot be sutured (stitched) back together. So, an ACL surgery that reconstructs the ligament is necessary to repair the ACL and restore the knee stability. This is called a knee ligament surgery and is usually performed as an arthroscopic surgery. Which is minimally invasive through a small incision and a knee scope. In ACL surgery, the torn ligament is replaced with a tissue graft that supports a new ligament to grow.

The most common grafts used in ACL surgery are autografts that use parts of a patient’s body. This includes the tendon of the kneecap (patellar tendon) or one of the hamstring tendons. In some cases, the quadriceps tendon from above the kneecap is used.
